Don,
Wow, what timing. I just got around to unpacking
the 1.2.3 release, and presto I was going to mail
you with some thought(s).
I have been thinking of making a 'receintly used'
T?$
(noisy line, sorry), type of object to be added
as a accessory view to the save and open panels.
I must admit, this idea is not new. It was
based on the Boomerang product for Mac.
2.5 years ago, we tried to do something rather
(that is Liveware tried) transparent to developers
in getting the object to be inserted in all
panels (open and save), but NeXT would _not_
discuss this with us, since it 'broke' all notions
of what privatacy an application could have.
Besides, as I have figured out, I do not think
it is even 'legally' possible to do since such
an invasion might break the application and cause
serious problems with the system's concept of task
space.
So, the idea was shelved. Now I have been considering
it as a developer supported object. It would
remember most frequently used files, and offer
them to the user of the application as either
a MiniMonsterShelf or a popup/pulldown list
of sorts. The biggest problem with the latter
of the two is that I would need to have the ability
to have submenus in the list. I still have not
figured out if this is even possible...
So, just a couple of thoughts. What do you think.
Could a developer (each app would have to support
the object) object like this fly?
Todd
